How much of the corridor to take in one day

The drive itself is under four hours without stopping. Almost nobody does it that way. Here's what each pace actually gets you.

Lake Louise to Jasper, same day

Realistic if you leave by 8am and are fine skipping the Columbia Icefield's paid activities — you can still stop at all seven pullouts, you just won't linger. Budget 8–9 hours including stops, and arrive in Jasper with enough daylight left to actually see the town.

This pace works best outside July/August, when the Icefield Centre and Peyto Lake viewpoint aren't fighting you for parking.

Overnight at Saskatchewan River Crossing or the Icefield

The most common pace, and the one this site is really built around. Day one: Lake Louise to the Columbia Icefield, with time to actually book an ice-explorer or Skywalk ticket if you want one. Day two: the Icefield to Jasper, with a proper stop at both waterfalls.

Two real overnight options exist at this pace, and they're not interchangeable. The Crossing Resort at Saskatchewan River Crossing (km 78) is the budget-friendlier, more central choice, but it's seasonal — closed roughly October through April. Glacier View Lodge, the only accommodation actually at the Columbia Icefield itself (inside the Discovery Centre building, a short walk from the glacier), costs considerably more but means you wake up at the icefield rather than driving back to it — and its own package includes the Ice Explorer and Skywalk tours as an evening/morning pair. Either way, book before you leave home: neither has a fallback if it's full.

This also buys you a shot at clear-night stargazing near the Icefield, well outside any town light.

Two nights, one full rest day

Worth it if you want to actually hike near Bow Summit or Sunwapta, not just photograph them from the pullout. Splits into: Lake Louise to Saskatchewan River Crossing, a full day based at or near the Icefield with a half-day hike, then the Icefield to Jasper.

This is the only pace where the two waterfalls stop feeling rushed — both are five-minute walks from parking, but the canyons reward slowing down.
